A dental crown is a cap that covers a damaged or weakened tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape, strength, and appearance — and in many situations, it’s the best way to save a tooth that can’t be fixed with a filling alone.
Traditionally, getting a crown meant two appointments stretched over one to three weeks. CEREC technology changes that. CEREC allows a custom ceramic crown to be designed, milled, and fitted in a single visit — no temporary crown, no second appointment, no impression trays.
Here’s how it works, what it can be used for, and when it might be the right choice for your situation.
What CEREC Stands For
CEREC is an acronym: Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It was developed in the mid-1980s and has been used clinically for over 35 years — this isn’t new or experimental technology. It’s a well-established system that has been refined significantly over the decades.
The core idea is that the entire process of creating a ceramic dental restoration happens in the dental practice, while you’re in the chair, rather than being sent to an external laboratory.
How the CEREC Process Works
There are three stages.
1. Digital scanning
Instead of physical impressions — the traditional trays filled with putty material that capture the shape of your teeth — your dentist uses an intraoral scanner. This is a small wand-like device that captures thousands of images per second and constructs a precise 3D model of your prepared tooth and the surrounding teeth.
The scan takes a few minutes. It’s more comfortable than putty impressions, and it produces a highly accurate digital model that can be reviewed and adjusted on screen before anything is manufactured.
2. Computer-aided design
Once the scan is complete, the dentist uses CEREC software to design the restoration. The software assists with the design based on the surrounding tooth anatomy, and the dentist fine-tunes the shape, bite, and margins on screen. The result is a virtual crown that fits your specific tooth precisely.
3. In-practice milling
The design is sent wirelessly to a milling unit in the practice. This machine carves the restoration from a solid block of high-quality ceramic in approximately 15 to 20 minutes. The ceramic is then polished, colour-matched to your surrounding teeth, and bonded into place.
Total chair time is typically around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the complexity.
What CEREC Can Create
CEREC isn’t only used for crowns, though crowns are the most common application. The system can also fabricate:
Inlays — restorations that fit within the cusps of a back tooth, similar to a large filling but made from ceramic rather than composite resin. Generally more durable and longer-lasting.
Onlays — larger than inlays, covering one or more of the tooth’s cusps. Sometimes described as a “partial crown.”
Veneers — thin ceramic shells bonded to the front surface of teeth for cosmetic improvement. Used to address discolouration, chips, minor misalignment, or worn edges.
Full crowns — full coverage restorations that cap the entire visible tooth. Used when a tooth is heavily damaged, has had root canal treatment, or is too weakened for a conventional filling.
Your dentist will recommend the appropriate restoration type based on how much tooth structure remains and what the tooth needs to function well.
How CEREC Compares to Traditional Crown Construction
The traditional process involves two appointments. At the first, the dentist prepares the tooth and takes physical impressions using putty-filled trays. A temporary crown is placed while the permanent restoration is made at an external dental laboratory — usually over one to two weeks. At the second appointment, the temporary is removed and the permanent crown is checked, adjusted, and cemented.
With CEREC, the process is consolidated into a single visit. There is no temporary crown period, no waiting, and no need to schedule a return appointment.
The ceramic used in CEREC restorations is a high-strength material — typically leucite-reinforced or lithium disilicate ceramic — that closely matches the appearance of natural tooth structure. It is also tooth-coloured and does not contain metal.
When CEREC Might Not Be the Right Approach
CEREC is suitable for a wide range of situations, but not every case is ideal for in-practice milling. Some complex restorations — particularly those involving unusual anatomy, significant aesthetic challenges, or specific material requirements — may still benefit from a laboratory-fabricated restoration. Laboratory technicians have additional tools and techniques available.
Your dentist will assess your specific situation and be straightforward with you about whether CEREC is appropriate. If a lab-made crown is likely to produce a better outcome for your case, that’s what we’ll recommend.

One of the things that makes CEREC particularly useful is how it combines with our evening hours. If you need a crown, you can book a single evening appointment — say, 5pm or 5:30pm on a Wednesday — have the entire process completed in one visit, and go home with a permanent restoration. No time off work for a second appointment, no temporary crown to manage, no waiting.
