Professional whitening vs over-the-counter products

Over-the-counter whitening strips and kits available in Australia typically contain very low concentrations of peroxide — enough to produce subtle changes over time, but limited in how much they can achieve. They also use generic, one-size-fits-all trays, which means the whitening gel doesn’t stay in consistent contact with all tooth surfaces.
Professional whitening, provided through a dental practice, uses higher concentrations of peroxide that aren’t available in retail products. Crucially, it also involves custom-fitted trays made from impressions of your actual teeth — which means the gel is applied evenly across every tooth surface.
The result is more predictable, more even, and generally more noticeable. It’s also supervised by a dentist, which matters because whitening isn’t appropriate for everyone (more on that below).
The two main professional options
In-chair whitening
In-chair whitening (sometimes called chair-side or power whitening) is done entirely at the dental practice in a single appointment of around 60 to 90 minutes.
The dentist applies a high-concentration whitening gel directly to your teeth, often activating it with a light or heat source. Multiple applications may be done within the same session. The process is fast, and results are visible immediately.
The trade-off is sensitivity. The higher concentration of gel and the accelerated process mean that some patients experience significant tooth sensitivity — sometimes starting during the appointment and lasting for a day or two afterward. For people with already-sensitive teeth, this can be uncomfortable enough to be a concern.
In-chair whitening is a good fit for someone who wants results quickly and doesn’t have significant pre-existing sensitivity.
Take-home professional whitening
Take-home whitening uses the same professional-grade whitening agents, but the process is more gradual. Here’s how it works:
Your dentist takes impressions of your teeth and has custom trays made specifically for your mouth. The fit is close and precise — the tray conforms to the exact shape of your teeth, holding the whitening gel in even contact with each tooth surface.
You wear the trays at home, typically for 30 to 60 minutes each day, over a period of one to two weeks. Some people prefer to wear them overnight if they tolerate it well — your dentist will advise on what’s appropriate for you.
The results are comparable to in-chair whitening, but they come more gradually. For many patients, this is actually preferable.
Why take-home whitening suits a lot of people
There are a few genuine advantages to the take-home approach:
Less sensitivity. The lower concentration of peroxide used in take-home kits, combined with the shorter daily application, tends to produce significantly less sensitivity than in-chair treatment. This makes it a more comfortable option for people whose teeth are already sensitive.
You’re in control. If your teeth feel sensitive on a particular day, you simply skip that day. You’re not committed to a 90-minute in-chair session where you’re partway through the process. The flexibility is real.
Results you can maintain. This is one of the biggest advantages of professional take-home whitening: you keep the custom trays. When you want to do a touch-up every six months or so, you just purchase more whitening gel. You don’t need to come back for another full whitening course — the trays last for years with proper care.
Done on your schedule. Thirty minutes of tray wear can happen while you’re watching TV, cooking dinner, or sitting at your desk. You’re not giving up a 90-minute appointment window.

Who is a good candidate for teeth whitening?
Whitening isn’t for everyone, and it’s worth knowing this upfront.
Whitening works on natural tooth enamel. It won’t change the colour of crowns, veneers, bridges, bonding, or tooth-coloured fillings. If you have visible restorations on your front teeth, whitening the surrounding teeth could create a colour mismatch — this is worth discussing with your dentist before starting.
Whitening also isn’t appropriate if you have:
- Untreated decay or gum disease — these need to be addressed first
- Very sensitive teeth or exposed root surfaces
- Certain types of intrinsic tooth staining (staining that originates from inside the tooth, which surface whitening can’t change)
